I have known my share of lawyers both good and, well, not so good. It seems they all have one thing in common: a degenerative gene that affects their ability to return phone calls or emails unless the subject affects the prospects of retaining their license to practice.

As an American living in Thailand with a discrimination case against a U.S. company operating here and headquartered in the District of Columbia, the most cost effective form of seeking legal advice was to search via the internet and send inquiring emails. Concerned that I would not have enough cash to pursue my case engaging an attorney on an hourly basis, I sent out about a dozen or so such emails posing the possibility of representing me on a contingency basis. You were one of only two who responded - the other; an unsigned message simply informing me the firm is not taking new cases!

While your email response explained that you do not take such cases on contingency, you actually offered to look around for another attorney who might! Lo and behold, a day passed and I received another email from you with contact information for just such an attorney. So touched was I by this effort above and beyond the call, I kept in contact with you and you continued to respond with comments on my issues and my strategy, which at this stage can proceed without legal representation.

If science could locate and clone the gene from which this rare behavior originates, I'm sure there would be huge profits reaped by implanting it in other attorneys (using a dull scalpel, I hope). But perhaps it's not a gene after all; perhaps it's just a good and warm heart that pumps out your obvious concern for people in distress.
